Germany: Bundestag prolongs "epidemic situation of national importance"
Datum: 25. August 2021 22:31
The German Bundestag today (25 August) continued to declare an "epidemic situation of national importance" due to the current Corona situation. 325 parliamentarians voted in favour of a corresponding motion by the government factions of CDU/CSU and SPD, 253 voted against with five abstentions. An epidemic situation of national importance exists when the federal government identifies a serious threat to public health in the entire Federal Republic of Germany. This gives the Federal Ministry of Health the right to issue orders without the consent of the Bundesrat; the determination thus creates a legal basis for Länder ordinances on concrete Corona measures such as contact restrictions or mandatory masks. It was first established by the Bundestag in March 2020 and its continued existence was last confirmed on 11 June. The special situation will now apply for another three months, after which it will expire without renewed confirmation.
